I feel we have a connection......

Day one. Who am i? and one hundred other questions.

So welcome to day one and my very first blog. Entering my first lecture on digital communications strategy i was preparing myself to drown, comprehending the power on the internet to me is the equivalent of asking how many stars are in the sky. My reasoning for embarking on a a course in Public Relations was a love for personal communication, crisis management and persuasion. Not a interest in the digital and "techie" world. Leaving my first lecture on digital communications strategy however i find myself with my head safely above the water. I, Amy Lauren O'Connor, already have an online identity. I have a facebook, a twitter, spotify playlists and now a blog. Lurry (1993) would describe me as owning "hyper-real estate" (although i am within the masses at the bottom of the real estate ladder) i started to wonder if I'm not as uninvolved is digital communications as i once thought. Following on from this can my initial reasons for participating in PR translate into the digital world? Can i communicate personally and persuade online? These are two aims of this blog, i wish to create a social identity which is true to my real world personality (hence the informal dialogue) and to persuade readers to follow this online identity or blog.

When considering my existing online identity my mind wondered to last years Christmas dinner and my uncle proclaiming from the other the other side of the table"How uni? I saw you dressed as a christmas pudding with 4 drinks in your hand on facebook" Yes Uncle Tony you did but the chances of my friends taking pictures of me in lectures or revising on the third floor of the library are slim. My facebook shows my social side. In contrast my new twitter account shows i only really follow PR agencies and news services. My professional side, maybe if my uncle followed me on twitter he would take me more seriously as a student. So hopefully this blog will show a more rounded side of my character alongside an analysis of my digital communications unit, finally I'm going to leave you with a site that really made me consider how keeping up your social identity can benefit your reputation. Thats all for now folks, tune in soon when i will be considering what makes great social media content.
